Tradition and Change in East Asia - Chris will take a multiple choice exam, and then we will begin work on Ch 27. For Ch 27, identify most important themes, and five most important facts for each theme. At least one fact from each of the three major empires. ▼ Culture/Religion • In the Ottoman Empire, there is a significant Christian minority. • In India there is syncretism between Hinduism and Islam • Western culture is not actively sought. • Women have lesser social standing than men. • Islam in Persia is modified to suit local cultural customs. ▼ Government • Rulers in all three Empires viewed Empires as personal possessions. • Succession wars are common, perhaps caused by steppe traditions. • Attacks/taxes on dhimmi in Ottoman and Mughal Empires strains relations with minorities. • Religious conflicts between Shia Safavids and Sunni Ottomans became political and played out in the Battle of Chaldiran in 1514. • There is a strong emphasis on expansion in all three Empires; when expansion fails, the Empires fail as well. ▼ Economy • Small but measurable population growth exists in all three Empires. • There is a small influence from American crops, most notably tobacco. • There is development of a coffee culture primarily in Safavid and Ottoman Empires. • Foreign trade is encouraged by all three Empires. • Economies in all three Empires becomes burdened with military expenditures. |
